Words as Constructions

چکیده
1. A lexical learnability problem The average English speaker with secondary school education knows about 60,000 words; many speakers know 100,000 words or more (Miller 1996). 'Knowing a word' involves knowing a variety of things: its phonological form, grammatical properties, meaning, and, for some words at least, the social contexts and genres in which it is normally used (e.g. the word horsy is used primarily in informal spoken language, while equestrian is much more formal). It is also a matter of degree: a person may have only passive knowledge of a particular word, i.e. be able to recognise it but not produce it, or have only a rough idea of its meaning: for example, one might know that trudge is a verb of motion without being aware what specific kind of motion it designates. At the other extreme, many speakers have very detailed representations which enable them to distinguish trudge from near-synonyms such as plod, yomp, and lumber. How is such knowledge acquired? To answer this question, it will be useful to make a distinction between 'basic' and 'non-basic' vocabulary. By 'basic vocabulary' I mean words designating relatively concrete entities which are learned early in development in the context of face-to-face interaction, where the extralinguistic context offers a rich source of information about meaning. In the simplest case, the

An Analysis of Persian Compound Nouns as Constructions
In Construction Morphology (CM), a compound is treated as a construction at the word level with a systematic correlation between its form and meaning, in the sense that any change in the form is accompanied by a change in the meaning. Compound words are coined by compounding templates which are called abstract schemas in CM. These abstract constructional schemas generalize over sets of existing...
متن کاملCoalgebras of Words and Phrases
We introduce two constructions of a coassociative comultiplication in the algebra of phrases in a given alphabet. As a preliminary step we give two constructions of a pre-Lie comultiplication in the module generated by words.
متن کاملAlternation Elimination for Automata over Nested Words
This paper presents constructions for translating alternating automata into nondeterministic nested-word automata (NWAs). With these alternation-elimination constructions at hand, we straightforwardly obtain translations from various temporal logics over nested words from the literature like CaRet and μNWTL, and extensions thereof to NWAs, which correct, simplify, improve, and generalize the pr...
متن کاملClassification of Inconsistent Sentiment Words using Syntactic Constructions
An important problem in sentiment analysis are inconsistent words. We define an inconsistent word as a sentiment word whose dictionary polarity is reversed by the sentence context in which it occurs. We present a supervised machine learning approach to the problem of inconsistency classification, the problem of automatically distinguishing inconsistent from consistent sentiment words in context...
متن کاملChapter 35 . Semantic change
35.1 Preliminaries This chapter discusses how linguistic expressions may change their meaning over time. Actually the scope is a bit more limited than that, in the sense that here we will only see examples of how words e.g. silly, very change their meaning. The term 'linguistic expressions' includes words, but also larger grammatical constructions. Grammatical constructions e.g. what in p...
متن کاملLicensing and Interpretation of N-words in Comparative Clauses
The available analysis of comparative constructions that intend to explain the possibility of NPIs to occur in than-clauses do not give a satisfactory account of the licensing and interpretation of N-words in such clauses. In this paper, I propose a different analysis of comparative constructions, which, contrary to previous analysis, does not assume any stipulation particular to such structure...
